The Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts (MISSA) have scheduled two items that may be of interest to lovers of the book arts.
- “The Book As Art”, led by Connie Michele Morley (July 1 to 5). From the MISSA website: “Using a wide range of techniques such as paper cutting, layering, folding, ripping, sewing, and collaging, the workshop will introduce basic forms of hand-made books such as accordion, star, tunnel and cut outs, while expanding on these techniques to incorporate found objects to make imaginatively crafted works of art. Extending work with hand-made books and book sculptures, the workshop will also engage with painting, drawing and collage to alter existing books into new forms. No experience is necessary, just a love for creative process! (All levels welcome)”
- “A Magic Carpet: Working with Handmade Paper”, led by Dorothy Field (June 22 & 23): From the MISSA website: “Working on a variety of handmade papers from Japan and Nepal, students will explore handmade paper’s innate qualities: its strength, malleability, translucence – its overall beauty. Besides books and scrolls, paper in Japan has been used for woven and starched clothing, wallets, furniture, toys, lanterns, etc.
In variations on traditional Japanese techniques, we will play with rumpling, crumpling, folding, spinning, starching, layering, colouring, monoprinting, and collage. In the process, we will make one or two simple books. Emphasis will be on experimentation and taking chances rather than preconceived ideas of perfection. (All levels welcome)”
